To Touche or Not To Touche

This article is about how to apply men’s makeup, specifically concealer finished with bronzer with a video included as a tutorial. Makeup was designed by humans for humans. This includes women, men, and every gender inbetween. There’s too much controversy surrounding men and makeup. People calling guys who wear makeup gay or overly feminine, get over it! I’m here to set the record straight (pun intended) and say that tons of men, (straight or otherwise) wear makeup on film and T.V. and sometimes everyday and it’s perfectly OKAY! But what’s more important is, I’m going to tell you what my favorite concealer for men is and how to apply it under your eyes. The good news is the tutorial part of this is for everyone, not just the men.

What  I Recommend: I’ve used a number of concealers over the years including anything from common drugstore brands like Maybelline, to those coveted concealers sanctioned off from the general public behind red velvet ropes like Tom Ford and Jean Paul Gaultier. So after trying them all, I’ve found the one you must own. The Touche Éclat by YSL. The magic pen that claims to hold 8 hours of sleep in the click of a pen. Lies and scandal? So far, I agree with their far fetched statement.

Let me quickly clear the air and say that I haven’t been paid for this write up/testimonial by means of money or with product and the views expressed are solely my own.

How It Works: The pen uses something called the Luminocaptide Complex (which is fancy for “we made this up in a lab”) in their powerful yet surprisingly light formula. The clickable contraption cascades volley after volley of lightweight illumination which highlights eyes, brushes away tiredness and brightens complexion. Whenever I go on camera I know my dark circles, fine lines and visible signs of fatigue are not going to make an appearance. You do have to know how to apply it and blend it out, otherwise, you’ll look like  a panda… so read on for application techniques and color selection.

Which Shade Do You Need: How could I possibly know what color of skin you have? Go to the link at the end of this sentence or into a store to have an expert peg your color perfectly. YSL Touche Éclat Skin Intensity Selector

Why You Need To Blend: Applying the Touche Éclat is one of the best parts of the whole experience because they make it SO EASY… and with my help, everyone will notice how refreshed you look instead of the makeup you’re wearing. First, click the Touche once or twice based on the level of coverage you need. I like to think of this as One Click for I tossed and turned all night and couldn’t sleep VS. Two Clicks for I slammed a 2-6 then hit up a keg party where a random aggressive stripper sat on my face so hard I have slight to medium bruising under my eyes…

Concealing: After you come to grips with where you are in life and determine how many clicks you need, apply the concealer under the eyes going from the inner corner of the eye and sweep out to the outer corner. You can lightly guide the concealer down from the eye toward the corner of your nose using the Touche Éclat’s built in brush making a triangle from your eye’s corners to the corner of your nose where your nostril flares out. Then BLEND BLEND BLEND! You can use a brush or your fingers, just make sure the brush is a concealer brush which is has short and thin in width real hair bristles. (Watch the video below (coming really soon) for a detailed explanation)

Then you’re done. Simply, easily, and naturally. Well… you’re finished with the concealing part anyway, now it’s on to the bronzing and further blending portion of the makeup/”I’m not wearing makeup” tutorial.

Bronzing: This is a step most needed unless you are an expert blender, but even then, I recommend using a bit of powder. If not bronzer then at least some powder to both set the liquid concealer in place and blend it even further into the rest of your face.

With bronzer’s, you should start with the forehead in round circular brush strokes toward the hairline using a wide thick real hair brush. Then sweep your face in downward strokes highlighting the cheekbones, nose and chin as those are the spots the sun hits most. This will leave you looking natural and sun-kissed. Finally go over the other parts of your face and be sure to blend in the concealer by sweeping over the eyes a couple of times.

Extra Tip: When you’re finished with the bronzing brush, wipe the extra bronzer from your lashes, brows, beard (if applicable) and hairline (if applicable) as bronzer tends to cling to hair.

When You Need To Wear Makeup: It’s completely up to you. If you never use it, then don’t start unless you are interested in looking a little better on film or at a special event. I only apply concealer when I’m on my way to a photo shoot, to film something, or for a special occasion like a wedding, large gathering, meeting someone new, when I’m wearing bright colors, when I’m clubbing, when I feel like it, when… I could go on. The morale of the story is… if you don’t give a shit about what society thinks but want to look good while in society, then buck up tough guy and slap that make-up on because… well… why not?

Be sure to watch my You Tube video on concealer application for men titled “The Best Concealer For Men” which details how to apply Touche Éclat and how to blend it using the techniques I mentioned above.
