Burberry Prorsum Men’s Spring Summer 2013
Wow what a popping electric collection from the house of Burberry. Christopher Bailey didn’t need to have rain pour from the ceiling to have a dramatic effect, the mirrored silks in beaming blue and zazzy green were enough to make the most pessimistic fashion enthusiast froth at the mouth in exuberant excitement.
Placing the order for the fabrics used in the Spring 2013 men’s collection must have had the heads at Pitti Uomo cocked to the side in confusion. Burberry is known for their tight tailoring and their use of gaberdine. Other than that they play the fashion game pretty safe especially in their menswear division. Bailey must have gotten bored with the “same old” and turned his focus to the stars because some of these outfits were out of this world.
A hot pink trench coat (that could have created its own source of light it was so reflective,) looked more like it was a piece of alien technology than a traditional trench coat from Burberry Prorsum. Nearly every look had at least one piece that appeared to be the pollination of neon lights and hyper intelligent alien worker bees. With honey comb prints in bright yellow and patterns that looked like they were developed by tribes that lived on the land centuries ago, the eclectic mix was just the right counter balance for the collection.
Whether it was metallic silk or metallic threads within a nylon blend, the tough yet flamboyant material serves two purposes, to steal attention, and to make Christopher Bailey come out smelling like extra-terrestrial roses. Now it is up to the general public to determine if the pieces are right for them or if the incandescent fabrics are too over the top. Lets hope the banging brightness stays a couple more seasons and equalizes to a somewhat more subtle/saleable level.
