Tonight was the Mercedes-Benz Start Up Edmonton Portion of the Program and it was a cut-throat atmosphere as only one winner progressed to the next level and only one designer went on to the finals. The prize… The ability to say you won this epic prize for starters… Secondly, a full runway show at World Mastercard Fashion Week (Toronot Fashion Week) and a professional mentorship with leading industries professionals. Keep Reading to see who won!
The even went off without a hitch, champagne flowed, high fashion was in sight, and Canada’s best of the west showed up with their best designs and highest hopes.
Having been at the Mercedes-Benz award ceremony last year was an eye opening experience and one that I will not soon forget. I got to see the amazing designs of strong fashion enthusiasts from all of the major cities in Canada and when Jessica Stam presented the award for the Mercedes-Benz Start Up to the designers of the Martin Lim line from Montreal I was thrilled and just as nervous for them.
That anticipation was in the air tonight as local blogger Janis from Dress Me Dearly said “her heart was pounding” and that “she was nervous.” The feeling was all throughout the room as anyone of these designers could be on an international spotlight at any moment and as the speaker nervously approached the podium to announce the winner, the room fell silent. Malorie Urbanovitch. Two words, then silence, then cheers and hollers, jumping and hysterics from her fans, family, and even her competitors.
After wining the Semi-Finals Malorie is off to Toronto in October to experience a higher level competition where only a handful of Canadian Designers make the mark and compete for the ultimate prize of recognition and exposure. Being at Malorie’s shows in the past I can vouch for her competency and now with her head fully in the game, this gem of a designer is destined for great things.
Some of the other contestants were:
- Luxx Ready-to-Wear (Derek Jagodzinsky)
- Suka Clothing (Alisha Schick)
- Eliza Faulkner
- Beth Richards
- Lauren Bagliore
- Loft 82 (Nicole Campre)
- Kelly Madden
- Bano eeMee (Aleem Arif)
- Rebecca King (Rebecca Farthing)
My Blogging Buddy Nik Smith From “A Though in the Mind Of” was by my side the whole night as we agreed on who was hot and what clothes will do well in Toronto and throughout the world. I highly recommend you check out her blog and FOLLOW HER!
