The Met is hosting an exhibit that surrounds an impossible conversation between Elsa Shiaparelli (who was huge in the 30’s and 40’s) and Miuccia Prada. As Marc Jacobs (who was wearing a lace dress) mentioned on the Met Ball Red Carpet, “The two have very different styles and completely different collections” but does that mean that they come from different places? It is said that the collaboration was intended to bring focus to the similarities between the two great designers and focus on their “striking affinities” by showing examples of the two houses work as well as orchestrated conversations between the two women.
Baz Luhrmann directed the impossible conversations and used an actress to portray Schiaparelli and explore how they approach their passion and go about their work in very different ways. Luhrmann who was of course present at the event looked great and his white and black mop of hair is perfect for a director, he really is talented so the mock “impossible conversations” should be great. Actually he kind of looks like Andy Warhol.
The Gala is not an awards show but simply a fundraiser for the arts that brings high fashion together with art. The event has raised over 16 million dollars in the past 10 years and has raised 11 million dollars this year alone. The fabulous event brings in people from every industry and vocation and the guest list is more exclusive than the Oscars. One person said during the live preview that he thought the waiters were dressed better than everyone who attends the Emmy Awards. And from the red carpet looks I would say he would be 100% right.
For more information on the exhibit you can go to The Met’s site or you can read the Official Press Release on Page 2.
“On View May 10–August 19, 2012
The Met’s Spring 2012 Costume Institute exhibition, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations, explores the striking affinities between Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada, two Italian designers from different eras. Inspired by Miguel Covarrubias’s “Impossible Interviews” for Vanity Fair in the 1930s, the exhibition features orchestrated conversations between these iconic women to suggest new readings of their most innovative work. Iconic ensembles will be presented with videos of simulated conversations between Schiaparelli and Prada directed by Baz Luhrmann, focusing on how both women explore similar themes in their work through very different approaches.
The exhibition will showcase approximately ninety designs and thirty accessories by Schiaparelli (1890–1973) from the late 1920s to the early 1950s and by Prada from the late 1980s to the present. Drawn from The Costume Institute’s collection and the Prada Archive, as well as other institutions and private collections, signature objects by both designers will be arranged in seven themed galleries: “Waist Up/Waist Down,” “Ugly Chic,” “Hard Chic,” “Naïf Chic,” “The Classical Body,” “The Exotic Body,” and “The Surreal Body.”
Schiaparelli, who worked in Paris from the 1920s until her house closed in 1954, was closely associated with the Surrealist movement and created such iconic pieces as the “Tear” dress, the “Shoe” hat, and the “Bug” necklace. Prada, who holds a degree in political science, took over her family’s Milan-based business in 1978, and focuses on fashion that reflects the eclectic nature of Postmodernism.”
