Red Carpet Trends
The Met Gala took place May 7th in front of the fashionable Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Red Carpet was buzzing with photographers and celebrities and though each dress was different, there were very distinct trends at this years gala. So if you find yourself with a red carpet invite be sure to pick up a dress that touches on one or more of these categories and you’ll be on the best dressed list for sure… or at least not on the worst dressed.
If there was one thing that stood out more than the celebrities themselves it was the gold they were wearing. The runway appeared to be a veritable Fort Knox and the red carpet the vaults. In fact there were so many celebs in gold the organizers had to space them out for the photographers. Some great examples were Carey Mulligan in Prada, Jessica Alba in Michael Kors, Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe, Jessica Paré in a L’Wren Scott gown, and Kate Upton in Michael Kors. This trend looked great on all the ladies lighter hair seemed to compliment this trend best.
Sleeves were huge at the Oscars and now they are on gorgeous celebs who were in attendance on the “East Coast Oscars.” Many of the young beauties and a few of the not-so-young were in long gowns that swept the red carpet but also their wrists. A sheath dress was usually used to compliment the lovely ladies, but a slim full length sleeve was used to keep it formal.
This trend was seen on Rihanna in Tom Ford, Beyonce Knowles in Givenchy, Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe, Renee Zellweger in Emilio Pucci, and Sarah Jessica Parker in a Valentino Couture dress. Many agree that the SJP dress was a little old school, but SJP said it took her to another time and place and reminded her of Elsa Schiaparelli.
Aside from the shimmering gold dresses there were also a great many mirrored dresses or pristinely polished silver dresses such as the one Lana Del Rey wore by Altuzarra, or the one Carey Mulligan wore by Miuccia Prada. But no one was prepared for the dress that Chloe Sevigny wore by Miu Miu. It was actually comprised of mirrors of various shapes and sizes and held together by a knit of some sort. Her bare skin peeked through the holes but the dress was altogether unflattering.
So if you are off to a gala anytime soon remember these simple trends that were seen on the runway and stick to them. You won’t be disappointed or booed off the red carpet.
