The Geometric World Of MISCHA Handbags
When I met Michelle Lai of MISCHA handbags in late March in her Hong Kong studio, I was taken back by her business savvy and determination. In the quaint office space, the feel was tasteful and the mood, hard working. Not totally nose to the grind but you know there is accountability and focus with a tinge of fashion obsession. How like the rest of us in the design and media world…
With a close eye on the handbag industry in North America, Europe and Asia, Michelle feels like it’s the right time to enter into the Canadian market in the next year. Her handbags are sleek and subtle with a design that will become more and more iconic through the ages. The price point is relatively the same as a mid range brand (think Michael Kors and Tori Burch) and the styling of her bags surround a travel lifestyle, so they’re strong and well made while being relaxed enough that they have a softer structure to them. Perfect for packing!
I’m actually obsessed with the dove grey and black signature interlocking hexagon monogram bucket tote. Michelle designed the print herself but before that, she was using her own vintage textiles to craft her handbags. Unfortunately it’s tough to expand a business while using vintage fabrics, so she looked back through her archived fabrics and saw that a good percentage of them used the hexagon. It was the perfect platform from which to craft her new staple material and with the inclusion of her brand on the monogram, it was complete.
*The hexagon represents a sea tortoises shell and also means longevity
Aside from being a a million degrees that day we chatted about the fashion scene in Canada (as Lai liven in Vancouver for a number of years) and we discussed how well the brand could do in the “snow bird” and “frequent flyers” clubs. Another perfect idea for her bags are destination weddings or just going somewhere warm for a vacay.
That being said though the way the bags are designed allows them to fit into a lot of city events as well like shopping and lunches with the girls. I would love to give this bag as a gift to someone because the style says “I’m going travelling” and who doesn’t love that?
Speaking of travelling, if you’re in Asia definitely look up MISCHA as they are huge in the Asian markets and all over Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore and Japan. Conversely you can also buy MISCHA handbags online here.
Thanks Michelle for taking time out of yr super busy day to chat with me I wish you all the best of luck with your beautiful collection.
Also thank you to Hong Kong Tourism for the trip of a lifetime! I am already dying to go back.
