Taking Tips From The Top On How To Be Cool
In a book I recently read that I would love to be published titled “Cool, A Concept” One of the “Rules of Cool” is “Unpremeditated dressing Is the Key to outer Distingué.” So I thought about that for, like, three weeks in a row, day and night (J.K. Oceans twelve reference) but seriously it got me thinking. Have I been dressing too obviously for too long? A mindful well put together outfit was what I thought was cool. Then again I’m the furthest thing from a cool kid and have no problem admitting that.
So what then does a cool kid make? When I was on my way to the Michael Kors show last year at New York Fashion Week, I saw this young fashionista wearing her overcoat placed gingerly atop her shoulders as if she didn’t have time to drag her arms through the sleeves. It looked… cool. I thought wow how chic. Of course since the Gwenyth Paltrow Tom Ford cape appearance at the Oscars everyone’s been a little off the shoulder obsessed. But can we still wear our jackets like that? It is still cool?
Michael Kors certainly thinks so and being as cool as he is I’d take his opinion seriously. His Pre-Fall 2014 lookbook was ripe with that confident rich kid self-assured presence. You know… the one that makes you cool…
Whether the overcoat is printed, patterned, colored or textured make sure it’s ever so slightly over-sized and the shoulders fit. Nothing more awkward or embarrassing than having your overcoat blow off your shoulders and into the mud because it’s too small and doesn’t hug your shoulders. Especially if it’s a sexy Michael Kors one.
