Trend Alert: Elizabethan Era

11/05/2012 by Mark St. James Leave a Comment

Everybody in Ruffs

Everybody in Ruffs!

There has been a lot of powdered wigs and full wired skirts on the red carpets as of late which leads me to believe that these are hints of what is to come for Fall 2013. The shows will not be seen until September so I won’t know fr sure until then but the signs are there that royalty will be in next season. To prove this to you I will show you the evidence I have collected so far and wrap it up in a pretty muslin dress.

Marc Jacobs is a trend setter and when people attend his shows they often look closely at his designs because they are the gateway into the future of fashion. So when he designed his Pilgrim style  shoe for his Fall 2012 Marc Jacobs Ready-to-wear collection it was evident that with the large hats that the buckles were more than just a pilgrim style, the buckles were a direct descendant of a Marie Antoinette style shoe. He of course didn’t go to the lengths that Christian Louboutin did for his version of the French footwear back in 2009 but the buckle detail is definitely there.

Another piece of evidence arrived in full regalia on the red carpet at The Met Gala this year. Elizabeth Banks did her hair in an up-do that was fitting for a 18th century noble woman and her Mary Katrantzou dress was as… odd yet fitting for a queen of that time. Another overly large gown that was seen on the runway was worn by Leslie Bibb in a Zac Posen ballroom gown. The waist must have had some boning and the massive skirts that were worn at that time. The only thing she was missing was a 12 foot train.

Elizabethan Era

I don’t know about you but I quickly became a Hunger Games fan after reading about the fashion in the Capitol. When I went to see the movie I was surprised to see that the people who were native to the Capitol wore clothing that really resembled those of the 18th century. Inflated shoulders and sleeves, slim corsetted waists, large hair, and hats. If my experience with movies and their influence on fashion is any indication, next season will have a royal feeling to it.

Lastly the fact that I would love it if all of a sudden white wigs and ornate jackets for men were introduced has nothing to do with my hope knowledge that Fall 2013 will  be full of royal ensembles and decadence.
