New York Fashion Week Refuses to Shrink
When Milan moved up it’s schedule a few months ago, Paris (which shows after Milan) followed. That change made Milan overlap London Fashion Week and would essentially make editors, buyers, and models have to choose between London or Milan. This choice is simple for most everyone, stay in London and attend shows that are full of new talent and really a gamble in terms of longevity or go to Milan where shows such as Dolce and Gabbana, Prada, Gucci, etc. will be showing, some say it was a move of strategy to wane the growing excitement toward London while others blame it on a scheduling mishap.
So why doesn’t London just move its Fashion Week back? Because, Milan is sandwiched between New York Fashion Week (which is the week before) and Milan Fashion week (the week after) so they were stuck unless someone gave in. New York had many people up in arms regarding moving their fashion week forward a couple weeks because the US celebrates Labor Day early September and was worried that they would miss their time off this year. Fortunately Labor Day will not be affected but New York has graciously moved back a week leaving room for London to have its fashion celebration.
The latest request from Milan was for New York to shrink it’s fashion week by a day but NYC has made it clear that they will not. It is very likely that Milan will accept these terms because of the huge concessions New York Fashion Week has already undertaken.
September 2012 fashion weeks will likely look similar to this:
- New York: September 6-13 2012
- London: September 14-18
- Milan: September 19-25
- Paris: September 26 – October 5
